One thing I love about buying local and supporting local businesses is that there is so much passion and care behind the products that they make and want to share with the world.
Piste & Trail is proud to be part of such a wonderful community down on the Far South Coast, and we would love to share our story with you.

I’m Sarah, and for years I organised my life around the snow, working ski seasons across Japan and New Zealand when the fresh powder was calling, then spending the off seasons hiking in nature, practicing yoga, and spending time with true locals in the nooks of rural Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Which is a polite way of saying I’m not very good at sitting still when there’s an adventure to be had!

I’ve always been obsessed with the feeling that travelling gifts you, whether that’s the peace of mind you get when you’re hiking through dense, ancient forests listening to the chattering of native birds, or the way your whole body switches on when you drop into an open alpine snowfield... or that first salty hit when you jump into the deep blue ocean and another world teeming with life opens up under the surface. Stunningly beautiful, and waiting for you to discover it.

When COVID put travel on pause and we settled on the Sapphire Coast as oyster farmers, I found myself missing all those places in this strangely physical way. So I picked up my iPad, opened Procreate, and started drawing elements from my adventures living rent-free in my head, partly because it was comforting and partly because I wanted to hold onto the details that make the outdoors feel like home.

These designs included mountain bike trail maps that have elegant style without being too obvious, alpine lines that remind you of smooth turns in the Snowy Mountains, oysters from Nelson Lagoon because marine life is everything on the Sapphire Coast, Echidnas on the track because they love to appear when you're least expecting it, and all the other little moments that make Australia feel completely unique.

My drawings eventually developed into small-run pieces made with intention, printed in limited quantities, embroidered in-house, and designed to last through real use, not just a couple of wears and a nice photo.

I want Piste & Trail gear to feel special. Your favourite piece of clothing you can keep coming back to, the way you return to your favourite coastal vista or your favourite ski trail.
